It’s a question that’s been asked since the first website was uploaded…and every (day, week, year?) the answers are different. Last years “hosting stars” may have been bought out of business, sold their business, or more likely in the hosting world, simply abandoned their business.
Finding the right web hosting service is not an easy proposition, especially considering that there are many thousands of web hosting providers (many that are resellers of resellers of resellers…) and almost all are now offering basically the same plans. It gives even more credibility to my conspiracy theory that there is really only ONE HOST… the rest just followers of HIS (or HER) GREAT HOSTING-NESS.
That being said, it is still important to know a few facts before you start your web hosting search. Here are 3 areas to start with should you be a seeker of THE HOST.
Web Hosting Features
Quite probably the most important component to consider. Guess wrong and that $5.95 a month plan just turned into $45. Ask yourself (and write the answers down), exactly what you require to make your website operate the way it was designed to, if not better. Be sure to include any and all technical requirements, including:
a) Server Platform/OS
b)Hardware Requirements
Does your website use programming environments like Active Server Pages (ASP), Visual Basic scripts, Cold Fusion or Microsoft Access? Does it need MySQL databases? How many? Do you plan on adding on, let’s say a blog, forums and chat? Maybe an Image Gallery or a Shopping Cart? Do any of your current scripts or programs require mod-rewrite or htaccess? How about Perl, CGI or PHP?
It’s the answers to all of those questions, and many more, that will determine if you require Windows Hosting or Linux/Unix Hosting. And it is not a small difference.
Next, How big are you now, how big are you going to get, and how many people will be coming to see you at your biggest?
c) Disk Space & Bandwidth
If your goal is to publish a WordPress Blog and post to it 3 times a week, go ahead and skip this part. However if you have even a single aspiration of becoming ranked in Google for a competetive term, have an active opt-in mailing list, host product giveaways, mini-stes, sales pages, squeeze pages, bonus pages, audio and video and a growing message board community, pay close attention.
First, the laws of physics should back me up when I say there is really no such thing as “unlimited” anything. I’m sorry if I ruined that for you. (There’s no Easter Bunny either!)
Note that when these plans are advertised there is almost always a * by the plan and/or lots of small print at the bottom. READ IT. Get a magnifying glass if you have too. A business simply cannot stay in business by selling you something for less than they paid for it. Do you really think your hosting company paid $5.95 for UNLIMITED hosting? (Nope-No Santa Claus.)
Unlimited is used a marketing tool, and always comes with plenty of “explanations.” What follows is an example:
“Since Client’s site is on a shared hosting account, we must also look out for the other Client’s on that account. Most of the time a Client’s site will support as much traffic as the Client can legitimately acquire. However, we reserve the right to limit processor time, bandwidth, or processes in cases where activity on a Client’s site makes it necessary to prevent a negative impact on another Client’s site”.
I could list several dozen others, but they basically say the same thing. “You have an unlimited plan until we say so. Period.”
Well, dear readers, that wraps up a, b and c. Later this week we’ll look at Reliability, Customer Service and Support, and Pricing
In closing, there are more than just a few reasonably priced, full-featured, hosting companies out there. The majority of the good ones have great support, good communication skills, and the ability to reason. In 10 years I’ve used 7 different companies-some I still do business with. By the time we wrap this up, you’ll know what to do…and with who. Promise.
In a hurry? Here’s a few to take a look at:

Question of the day…Who (and why) Do YOU Host With?
